Putin says orders govt to consider Sakhalin bridge construction
MOSCOW, Jul 24 (PRIME) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the government to consider construction of a bridge to the Sakhalin Island on Tuesday.
“I know that the issue of construction of a bridge between Sakhalin and the continent has been discussed since long ago, for decades… This is a long-standing dream of those who live on the Sakhalin. It could be a significant factor in keeping people there – you can come and go in any season, in any weather,” he told Sakhalin Governor Oleg Kozhemyako.
“This could trigger development of the north of the Khabarovsk Region, because you will have to create roads … I have ordered the government to work on this. Let’s see.”
A technical feasibility study of the bridge will be completed in December 2018. If the federal government approves the project, construction will start in 2021 and can last for about five years.
